I recently ran across a couple of pages at the 'Maps of War' website. I thought that they were pretty neat animations.One of them shows the various empires which ruled the European and Middle Eastern areas over the centuries.
Another is an animation of the various military conflicts that the US has been a part of over the course of American history.
