Entry: Germany, Day 6

We went to check out the Burg Nanstein castle that overlooks Lanstuhl and gives a great view of the Rammstein airfield. Apparently, a paranormal group went to the grounds a few years ago to do an investigation.

This was, bar none, my favorite castle yet. It wasn't prettied-up for the sake of the tourists and there were no guides to tell you what you could and couldn't do. They were raw ruins with a ton 'o history including cannon balls stuck in the walls and dungeon-like catacombs.

Yes...it's sideways. I failed to rotate before uploading and am feeling too lazy to do anything about it.

Yep...this one's sideways too. This was the vicious attack dog.

I was interested how they built the castle INTO the mountain's foundation. The problem is that it's all clay and you can literally brush indentions into the clay with your finger.

Into the catacombs we go.

A great shot of Ashleigh and Curtis taking a picture through a grate.

Georganna leaning over the castle wall.

Ashleigh contemplating mortality.

I think it's neat that they had grass and plants growing on the roof of the castle.

Couldn't get Curtis to look up.

Escher would love this place.

This drove me crazy. I want to bring a bulldozer back some day and dig out all of the parts of the castle that had collapsed.

This plaque labels everything that you can see from this vantage.

"1595"

You can clearly make out at least two cannon balls still lodged in this wall which is pock-marked with impacts from a siege that occurred 400+ years ago.

OMG, what an odd way to knock, with cannon balls? If you do ever head back with that bulldozer, I will help and bring a shovel.
