Entry: Happy Friday the 13th!!

Happy Friday the 13th everybody! Not only is it one of the luckiest days of the year, but was one of my favorite movie series growing up.

I'll bet that not many of you know how this day came to be "unlucky". Sacrilege (sp?)!!! It's an interesting little tidbit from Catholic history. :)

Interestingly enough, way back in the day, King Phillip (who was king of France a million years ago sometime) ordered all of the Templar knights in France to be rounded up. They were all eventually executed on charges of heresy. It was a mad dash for cash. That's what the knights get for being so rich!! Kinda reminds me of the whole camel-through-needle's-eye saying. Here's the story if you're interested.

Picture: It's Friday!!!

Entry: The SC Aqarium

I just wrote a looong commentary on the SC Aqarium and why I don't like them very much. I decided to erase it for the sake of karma. :)

Entry: Two-timing....good or bad?

I'd like to hear some opinions on the idea of dating multiple people at the same time. I'll try to get the ball rolling myself.

It has been my opinion in the past that it is permisable to date more than one person at a time provided that there are certain rules that are observed. They are....
  1. You are not in a commited relationship with any of them. You are, instead, simply trying multiple avenues to see which one "fits" best with the idea being that you will eventually end up in a committed relationship with someone
  2. You are not indulging in any sexual activity with any of them
  3. They are all aware that you are seeing other people as well
  4. You are completely forthcoming when the time comes for you to commit to someone and the others need to know about it
Now, keep in mind that I am not claiming that my way is the "right way" of doing things. I am just curious to hear other people's views about it. And please feel free to post anonymously for this one if you want to. :)

Artile: Waking up is like being drunk

Here is an article over on CNN that talks about the a person's state right after they wake up and say that the affects are similar (if not worse) than simply being drunk.

Personally, I think that that short period between slumber of lucidity is a very "interesting" time.

Entry: A blurb on modern marketing

So, I was just reading this article here about how the Levi jeans company is adding a special pocket to their pants to keep Ipods. Is anyone out there tired of hearing about Ipods? I mean...even the ones who HAVE one?! Everything these days are engineered around this little gadget. Next thing we know, software will start shipping with "Apple IPOD compatible" stickers on them. Your toilet will have an "IPOD Inside" logo on the tank. It kinda reminds me of the Atkins craze (which is now thankfully dying out). What's funny is buying a thing of Planters peanuts and having a big label on the side that says "0 Carbs!!". Dieticians out there should get a kick out of that one. Blah I say.

Picture: Cats n' Dogs

Just when all seems right with the world, something like this happens. The more I look at this picture, the funnier it gets. :)

Picture: Priceless

Granted, this is a tad risque for my blog, but I figured it was worth it for the hilarity! :)

This is just weird. This house was SO cluttered that the husband not only had to call the police to report that his wife was missing, but to have them SEARCH the house for her!

Just a warning to all dog owners out there. There is some bad dog food circulating that is killing dogs!

Picture: Philippine sunset

This is a really cool picture. Thanks to Christina for sending it to me. :)
"People gather along a park near the sea wall at the scenic Manila Bay to watch the sunset Friday in Manila, Philippines."

Entry: Jerry's revenge

Some guy thought that it was ok to take a mouse that he caught inside of his house and throw it into a burning pile of leaves. Anyway, the mouse got its revenge.

Personally, I'd find this story hilarious if the mouse hadn't had to die for it to happen. :)

Entry: My weekend

My weekend was nicely slack (mainly because I was tired-as-heck the whole time). Went to go see 'Hostel' Friday night. You can read my review below. Good times regardless, though. Saw it with a friend whom I haven't seen in a while.

A friend of mine drove in from Columbia. She and I mostly just chilled on Saturday. Nothing big to report there.

Sunday was fun. Went wallclimbing at the James Island Co. park. That was a blast! I didn't realize what a strain an activity like that is on the forearms. My arms were killing me afterward!

Movie: Hostel

6.5 out of 10 stars for this little piece of work. The 'horror' parts of this movie were pretty gruesome (and I do mean GRUESOME). It was a glorified bloodbath.

This movie reminds me a lot of 'Cabin Fever', however. Like that movie, this one tried to mix extreme horror with occasional comedy. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes it didn't. Overall, I'd have to say that 'Cabin Fever' was definately better done.

Also, it took WAAAAY too long for this story to take off. The first 30 minutes of the film were spent in over-gratuitous sex scenes. Now, granted, that usually isn't a problem for me, but come one! Enough was enough!!

Article: Your phone records are for sale

Yes...you read that headline correctly. This isn't a gag story either. Certain federal and local authorities are warning their employees about this possible danger to security and privacy. This is kinda scary!

Can somebody please explain to me how something like this is legal?!

Entry: Evangelising in the World of Warcraft

In this article, Winning Souls to Christ in the World of Warcraft, they interview a couple of teens who use their time online wisely. Why not combine a hobby like online gaming with that of saving souls!! Two birds with one stone baby!! :)

Oh...and remember to consider the source. ;)

One prospective missionary at the Landover Baptist Christian Academy says, "Most people who are mean, liberal, nasty, lonely, unsaved losers in real life choose to play the Horde (an evil race of characters in the World of Warcraft) and people and guilds who are conservative, Republican and pretty much easier to win to Jesus Christ with are found in the Alliance. That's why the real True Christians™ pick the Horde to play as characters and start their guilds in Horde territory because they like the challenge of sharing Christ's message in a perilous, lava-soaked, environment. Sometimes you have to pester people for weeks before they listen to you. I followed some stupid gnome around for 8-hours until he finally told me that he would accept Jesus as his Personal Savior if I would just promise not to contact him anymore. Now that rocks!"

Tracy e-mailed me this cute story. Thought I'd share it

A husband was in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary.

His wife told him "Tomorrow there better be something in the driveway

brand new bathroom scale.

Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for this Saturday.

Article: He-Man movie to come out in '06

Apparently, He-Man is making another leap to the big screen. Now, normally I'd be all psyched. I LOVED He-Man back in the 80's. "BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULLLLLLLL!".

My mixed feelings about this come from the fact that there actually was a 'Masters of the Universe' movie that came out in the late 80's which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero. That movie bit. It bit hard. We'll see how this one turns out.

Article: Netflix thief

Ya know....postal workers stealing DVDs from the mail is one thing. However, when your thievery affects almost a quarter of all netflix business in a single mailing code, you know that chances are that you might get caught! This is particularly true if you're witnessed throwing a bunch of Netflix DVD packages in the trash near the post office.

Picture: Is this really wise?

Sometimes, people just need to sit back, relax, take a deep breath, and ask themselves...."Is this REALLY something that I should do?". For instance, take this guy riding on his rocket bike. Apparently, it can go from 0 to 60mph in 5 seconds. Grandmaster Darwin would be proud!

Picture: Ashling and Rex

This is a cute picture that my mom sent me this morning. This is a picture of my step-niece Ashling checking out Rex (my Betta). Rex was staying with my mom whilst I was in Florida for the week. Just thought I'd share this with the world. :)

OK...everybody...repeat after me.....
AWWWWWWWWWWW!

My buddy Mike thought it prudent to post this little piece of legal advice to all motorists on his blog. I figured I might share it with the world.

Entry: My first Soduku puzzle

So a friend of mine was explaining to me how to solve these Soduku puzzles this past weekend. The picture here illustrates the gist of the layout. Basically, each vertical column has to have a single instance of numbers [0-9] and so do the horizontal columns. In addition, each of the 9 larger squares (denoted by the darker black lines) must also have the same. So, after hearing much testimony about how people have enjoyed these puzzles endlessly for years, I decided to check one out. I thought to myself...."This might be a good waste of time on an airplane or something to do on a rainy day".

Anyway, after having the rules explained to me, I stared at my first puzzle. This is about the time that I realized what a complete and utterly hopeless geek I am. I didn't see it as a puzzle....I saw it as a problem. I immediately thought to myself that this is nothing more than a constraints-based backtracking search problem. I immediately had flashbacks to my AI class in college. I then proceeded to test out my algorithm manually on this single puzzle and it happened to work perfectly. So, now that I've figured out how to solve this kind of problem, I now know that I can solve every valid puzzle of its kind.

So, now having felt that I've figured out how to solve every Soduku puzzle possibly conceivable, I no longer have the desire to ever look at another one again. This is a simple testimony to how utterly whack I am. :) Word of wisdom to all parents out there....if you ever want your child to maintain his/her imagination to its fullest extent, don't EVER teach them to program computers!! :)

Entry: A note on an earlier comment

An anonymous person posted a comment on my blog last week about my attitude concerning alcohol and how I represent it on my blog. Here is the comment as it was written....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You seem to have a huge problem with people who consume alcohol, with the caveat that they are cool when they are not drinking. Seems to me that you need to let go of whatever you have against drinkers (heavy or not) and go with the "live and let live" philosophy. Why not let people make their own mistakes? I know that blogs are suppsed to be about personal commentary, etc., but this feels more like a manifesto than anything else. Chill out!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to set the record straight on this one for anyone who might be curious.

Firstly, I don't disapprove of alcohol. This is important to understand. I also don't disapprove of people who drink it. Anybody who knows anything about me at all or has spent any time around me knows this. I'm also a really great DD.

I do have a problem with irresponsible drinkers. There are three types that I don't really like to hang around....
- people who drink with the sole purpose of getting trashed
- people who always think that they're alright to drive regardless of their state
- people who don't take responsibility for the things that they do when they're under the influence. That
whole "Oh...sorry about that...I was drunk" excuse really doesn't work with me. I've heard it so many
times that it makes me ill.

All in all, I do enjoy being around people who are indulging a bit simply because I get a glimpse into what is really going on in their minds that they're usually too reserved to talk about. The friends that I hang around have never had a problem saying 'no' when the time came for a refill but they had to drive later. And, in the event that they did say or do something stupid while under the influence, I like the fact that they'll apologize for it later. Even last week when I was with that huge group of drinkers, they all knew when to call it quits and were smart enough to have their DDs assigned beforehand.

So, in short, just because I do some creative reporting on here at times regarding alcohol consumption does not mean that I have a crusade against it. It simply means that I have a perspective on it that 99% of the population can't claim to have and I'm quite comfortable with it. :)

Entry: Recommended gadgets

I figure that it's time that I give some kudos to some very neat technologies that I have recently started using. They have both survived their trial runs and I can honestly say that I'm hooked!

The first such service is Vonage. That is one kick-butt company! Not only am I impressed-as-heck with the service, but I also took my vonage phone adapter with me down to Tampa over the holidays. I plugged it into my buddy's internet connection and voila! I took my home phone with me. That was just cool. People in Charleston were making local calls to me as if I was still there and at no extra charge. Plus, even though I wasn't in Charleston, all of my long distance calling was free. Vonage is the bomb! Check it out at www.vonage.com if you haven't already. The only downfall to this is that you have to have a reliable broadband internet service provider. So far, my Comcast service has fit the bill. I hope it remains that way.

Secondly, I'd like to give it up to the folks over at Tivo. I got one for Xmas and am loving it! I don't know how I survived the last 5 years without one. It's time to get caught up on my 'Family Guy' and my 'Farscape'. Also, there's a 'Battlestar Galactica' marathon on Thursday that I'm looking to enjoy over the weekend. ;) Go to www.tivo.com and read about the rich set of features that this system provides. I could actually argue that a DVR helps you watch less TV. On a random note, I watched my first (pre-recorded) episode of MacGuyver yesterday. It was the pilot episode. Did you know that you can seal a leak in a tank filled with sulfuric acid with a candy bar? Yeah...neither did I. Now we do! :)

Entry: Ohio State beats Notre Dame

Yes...it is true. OSU beat out Notre Dame last night....34-20.

Why am I posting this? You thought that I hated sports?? Well, you're absolutely right. The reason that I feel I need to post this is because I was with a friend last night who enjoys the heck out of football and she decided that she was rooting for Notre Dame. Personally, I don't care either way. However, for the sake of random strife, I decided to root for the team that she wasn't (mainly because I'm a bastard).

Anyway...just thought I'd rub it in her face a little more. ;)

Entry: Xmas was good to me this year

Fortune smiles upon me once again for this year, I am enjoying making jerky with my new dehydrator and am enjoying the heck out of my new Tivo (with some fenagling)! Woohoo!!!! :)

Entry: Happy New Year!

Well folks....it's 2006 and we're staring down the barrel of yet another year.

My new years eve was pretty good. Can't complain one bit. The bottom fell out on a party to which I was supposed to be going so, instead, a friend came over and we hung out for a few (more like 8) hours.

I got to sleep around 4am this morning and am probably going to be a zombie for the rest of the weekend. :)

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYBODY! ONE MORE YEAR CLOSER TO DEATH!! WOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Movie: Fun With Dick and Jane

6 out of 10 stars for this one. It had some funny moments, but wasn't exactly a blockbuster. I didn't mind paying to see it once. Of course, will I be buying this movie when it comes out? Doubtful. ;)

There was one aspect of this movie that I enjoyed (even though it was a serious aspect in the midst of a comedy). I could definately appreciate the way that the wife in this movie not only remained loyal to Dick but also maintained her sense of humor and supported her husband through the times. Now, granted, I know that it was all for the sake of comedy, but that's the kind of things that I absorb from movies. :)

Entry: Hashing pictures

Click here to see the pictures from last night's hashing event. It was comical (to say the least). And yes....please do notice the bottle of WATER that I'm holding in that one picture. ;)

Entry: First-time hasher

Ok, so I went hashing last night for the first time with Mike and his hashing buddies. I had heard about his running/drinking activities but I had yet to actually witness the spectacle for myself. I'm really at a loss to describe the event. It's kinda like a cross between an old 90's style BBS group and a co-ed fraternity with a REEEEEALLY filthy mind. I don't think I've heard such profane songs in quite a long time (if ever!!). It was fun though. Plenty of comradery to go around. :)

Oh...and NO I did NOT do any drinking. ;)

Article: State of the Union

Ouch! This guy was forcibly dragged out of his vehicle and savagely beaten. "Why?" you ask. Well....because he honked at some folks standing in the middle of the street to try to get them to let him pass.

You know....I think it's just sad. Typically, I wouldn't bother to post an article like this, but it goes far to illustrate a beef that I have with a large portion of the US populace. The funny thing is that so many people in this country look at the rest of the world with contempt because they aren't "like us". I mean, here we have random beatings, school shootings, uni-bombers, anthrax killers, a zillion different illegal malitias, and a countless number of Jerry Springer specials, and yet we're "so much better than everybody else". It's funny how many people have such tunnel vision that completely keeps them from being as introspective as they need to be. Bah.

Article: Letterman mentally harassing viewer in NM

This story is kinda funny. Apparently, some woman is trying to get a restraining order against David Letterman. She claims that he's been mentally harassing her since 1993 through the TV and has even gone so far as to propose marriage to her in the same fashion.

Have you guys ever seen those movies where something extraordinary like this happens and nobody believes the person? In the end, it turns out that they were right and everyone feels stupid about it. So, in this case, Letterman might actually be a mind-sucking alien who has been tormenting this poor woman through her television and we all simply refuse to believe her.

I, for one, welcome our new late-night TV host overlord.

Entry: A note on drinking

I realized something about alcohol last night. It seems like it's really common sense, but at the same time, it's really not. One of the things that I don't like about alcohol is how you are around people that are drinking, you get to deal with possibly several different personalities for each person. For instance, I wake up this morning and I'm exactly the same person that I was last night (and yesterday afternoon and yesterday morning, and so on). When I first met R last night, she was very reserved and didn't talk much at all. Then, later, she was very loquacious. By the end of the evening, she was downright "personable" (for lack of better and more kosher ways to say it). The problem is that when you see them again, chances are that they're not going to be the same person that you remember last because the alcohol has worn off.

On a related but different note, Mike has this neat lit portable breathilyzer. Watching them use it last night was a trip. At one point, R blew a 0.12. Too bad I couldn't get F to use it. That girl would have made that thing explode! :)

Entry: How I spent my Christmas

Ok, so yesterday we ended up going to Busch Gardens afterall. We stayed there for about 6 hours. All was good. I had a good time. As usual, Mike was trying to get me to go on all of the gut-wrenching rides that I typically don't like (and yes..I am such a wussie).

After the gardens, Mike's date (we'll call her 'R') came over. Nice girl. The three of us decided to go bowling. Yaaay! Can't remember the last time that I had been bowling. It was quite awesome. So, we bowled three games (each of us winning one of them) and then spent a good half-hour at the air hockey table (which I, for some unknown reason, dominated).

During the melee, R met some other girl (we'll call her 'F') at the bar. She had found her "smoke buddy" (since neither Mike nor myself smokes). Anyway, R and F became fast friends. R had the bright idea that F would make a great date for me since I was the odd-man-out. It seemed like an okay idea at the time. I mean, F wasn't TOO terribly bad (even given the excessive makeup, bad smoking habit, very weird looking lip ring, and strange compulsion to refer to some guys as female genitalia).

Anyway, midnight came around and the bowling alley closed down. So, Mike, R, and I were heading back to the house. Of course, R's new best friend F was coming with us (and so was the bar tender who just happened to be one of F's best friends). F picks up yet ANOTHER drink and heads for her car. Ok....for those of you needing a mental picture, imagine a girl who was blitzed out of her mind after ~13 drinks. She gets ANOTHER drink (we're talking a glass....not a bottle) and heads for her camaro and says that she'll meet us there (meanwile stumbling all the way). It was a total cliche. It would have been hilarious had it not been scary. So, of course, I intervene and tell her that she's in no shape to drive. She then tells me that she wants me to drive her car back to Mike's place. I reluctantly agreed. F climbed into the passenger side of her car with her drink. The bartender (whom we will call 'J') walks over to the car and asks if we're alright. I point to her drink and ask him about the state laws here in Florida. Anyway, let's just say that she finished the drink before we left the bolwing alley. :)

By the way, one of the more redeeming qualities of R was that she absolutely LOVED 80's music. She had a car full of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears CDs just lying around. Can you say "sweeeeeeet"? :) Anyway, back to Mike's we went.

We get there and R decides that she wants to take her Billy Idol CD in and play it on Mike's stereo. Not a bad idea if I do say so myself. So, what ended up happening was that we had two drunk chicks (one was drunk, the other was completely and totally blitzed) dancing in the middle of Mike's living area. Cute. As usual, they made me dance too. The yak was out in full form.

After dancing, we decided to utilize Mike's hottub. By that time, J had shown up and the party was on. Of course, Mike was the only one with a bathing suit (well...actually, I lie. J didn't have one either but he borrowed one of Mike's). So, in true god-I'm-glad-I-don't-drink style, the two girls decided that it was underwear-in-the-hottub night. I, of course, wore a pair of khaki shorts. Yes...I'm a wussie.

That was pretty much the extent of the evening. Nothing more than smoking (not me), drinking (again, not me), and galavanting around the hottub. It was actually pretty fun.

Around 2am, we all got out and F decided it was time for her to go. Again, we had to "remind" her that she'wasn't fit to drive since we'd lost count of the number of drinks that she'd had. To add another twist to a seemingly odd evening, F decided that she wanted to kidnap R for the evening and bring her back to their place to spend the evening with them. Ooooookay. So, because R was on the fence about it, she convinced Mike to go with her who, in turn, convinced me to go. Well...actually, they tried. I decided to stay behind. Eventually, Mike, R, and myself decided to stay behind. F moaned and complained. We had suspected throughout the night, but it was quite clear by that point that F was lusting after R. Lovely. The drama was getting a tad thick for me so I decided to retire for the evening.

I went to my room and hit the sack. The last thing I remember is R bursting into my room just after I'd fallen asleep and screaming "What are you doing?!?!". Typical drunk chick maneuver. Blah.

Anyway...more adventures to come. :)

Entry: Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everybody. I certainly hope that everybody enjoys their holiday today (that is, those who actually celebrate it). Mike and I were planning on going to Busch Gardens today but it sounds to me like the weather isn't necessarily going to oblige us. Oh well...no big loss. Just more sleeping in that I get to do. ;)

Movie: Syriana

Hmm....7 out of 10 stars for this one. I saw this movie back on Wednesday but have been to slack to post a review of it. It was a pretty good movie. It's one of those that you'd have to see at least three times before you started to understand the entire story and, even then, would still realize something new every time after that.

Great actors. Great music. If you're a fan of keeping up with current events and the like, then this movie won't disappoint.

Entry: A lucky day

Today is a very lucky day. I did the usual 8-hour drive to Tampa. I have arrived safely.

Along the way, I was stuck in a traffic jam. In that traffic jam, I was unfortunate enough to rear-end a minivan full of people. Of course, it was entirely my fault and all the damage was on his vehicle and not mine. It would shock me if there a penny less than $3,000 of damage to pay for.

How is this lucky you ask?

Here are the reasons:
  • I hit the guy doing 5mph. Had I not been on a traffic jam, my mistake could EASILY have happened while I was doing 70-80mph. Yes...it was THAT dumb of a mistake.
  • The family lives in Hilton Head. We had a weird South Carolina comradery thing going on.
  • The gentleman was kind enough to allow me to pay out of pocket. That's a very GOOD thing for me.
Yes....it happened. No, it didn't have to. But, if it had to happen, it couldn't have happened any better. I figure that this is a relatively cheap way to learn this particular lesson. Now, back to being poor for a while. ;)

Entry: Tampa, here I come!

Well...it's that time of year again. I'm off to see my buddy Mike down in Tampa. Hopefully, I'll get a whole lot o' nothin' done while I'm down there. I hope to do some sleeping in, some eating out, maybe some more sleeping, playing with Kenda (Mike's beautiful canine), seeing Tracy and Amy again, probably a trip to Orlando, sleep some more, maybe do some geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/), check out some movies, and finally, sleep in every morning. That should just about cover it. ;)

Don't worry, I'll give a play-by-play on my blog while I'm down there. Unlike my trip to CA last month, I will be completely wired this time. Updates to follow!

Oh...one more thing. I'm planning on taking my Vonage phone adapter with me. So, if everything goes according to plan, anyone should still be able to get in touch with me by calling my home phone #. Yes...it should work even in Florida. No long distance charges! :)

Entry: Cute joke

You should enjoy this....

------------------------------------------------------
During class, a teacher trying to teach good manners
asks the students, one by one -
"Michael, if you were on a date, having supper with a
nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have
to go to the bathroom?" she asked.
"Just a minute, I have to pee."
The teacher replied "That would be rude and impolite!"
"What about you Tom, how would you say it?"
"I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom,
I'll be right back."
The teacher responded, "That's better, but it's still
not very nice to say the word bathroom at the table."
"And you Johnny, are you able to use your intelligence
and show us your good manners?"
"I would say: Darling, may I please be excused for a
moment, I have to shake hands with a very dear friend
of mine, whom I hope you'll get to meet after supper."
The teacher fainted.

Article: Adios, 'Firefly'...

It's official. Joss Whedon has pulled the plug on the Firefly franchise. This is truly a sad day for mankind. This was one of those truly great shows that was screwed by nothing more than the human condition. It catered to such a broad array among many different demographics and I honestly can't think of a single person who wouldn't like it. Unfortunately, the movie didn't make enough money to rekindle the franchise. Sad days. :(

Article: XBox 360 scalpers get robbed

This is a funny article. Some guys went into a store with the intention of buying a bunch of Xboxes and try to sell them at a profit to the folks standing in line outside the door. However, they were followed on their way to lunch. Hilarity ensues.

Read here.

(Thanks to Melvin for pointing this out)
