Entry: Exploring Unseen Charleston (Magnolia Cemetery)

Ok...so this isn't so much a part of "unseen" Charleston, but it is DEFINITELY old, cool, and something in Charleston that everyone should see if they haven't already.  My mom had never been before so it became the perfect opportunity to add this site to my Unseen Charleston series.

For those who don't know, Magnolia Cemetery is a walk back through history.  It's full of old families, fallen soldiers, and revolutionaries.

By the way...external shots of this cemetery have shown up in other posts (such as the railroad track excursion).

My mom.  And an old mausoleum.

Random shot.

Random shot.

This was actually pretty cool.  There were a couple of graves that looked like they were lifted/slid into place and had breathing vents installed.  [Insert horror movie reference here]

Random shot.

 I rather liked this grave.

From the grave above.  Apparently, this dude was an important contributor to the southern secession.

Random shot.

"Yes...I'd like a sundial and a spooky font, please."

Random shot.

One of the more awesome mausoleums.

Stain glass from inside the above mausoleum.

Mausoleum row.

Random shot.

This mausoleum had been cleared out and the bodies presumably placed elsewhere.

Random cemetery marker in the marsh.

Now, this is something you don't see every day.  It's called a meridian marker.  The interesting part is that it looks like a grave, and it's right next to other graves.  It reads "True Meridian Oct 1849".

Here's the Italian flag that was referenced from the railroad track post.

Random shot.

Magnolia Cemetery is the resting place for all three crews from the CSS Hunley.

Another shot of the Hunley crews.

A confederate unit burial.

A close-up of the above headstone.

More confederates laid to rest.

Now THIS is how you hold up a tree!

Magnolia is also home to a rather famous confederate cemetery.  I remember one of my high school texts having this same illustration for the poem 'Ode To the Confederate Dead'.

Another shot of the confederates.

I rather liked this plaque.  The image of God dropping flowers on the graves of the fallen was very interesting.

Random confederate shot.

More on the confederates.

Volunteer firefighters.  I'd never noticed that before.

They even had an old-school fire engine on one of the stones.

"There, from the music round about me stealing,
I fain would learn the new and holy song,
And find at last, beneath thy trees of healing,
The life for which I long."

The bridge.

I know it's difficult to see, but the thing that struck me was that this gentleman was the recipient of the Czechoslovak War Cross.  Interesting.

Random shot.

Nice obelisk.

Random shot.

Huh?

What you can't see here is that the stones surrounding this grave are in the shape of a rampart from Ft. Sumter (which is where this gentleman fell in battle).  Nice touch!!

This is a shot of the back of a really neat mausoleum.  It has grass on top of it.

Random confederate grave.

They actually mow the top of this thing!

An inside shot of that mausoleum.

Nice.

A tomb with balls.

Random shot.

Random shot.

The best grave ever.  He's got his life story, a street sign (missing the sign), and his bust.  There's no way to beat that!

This woman had no grave.  She had a tree instead.

Kinda neat.  She was a teacher.  That's actually a stack of books in the middle.

Random shot.

Random shot.

Nice treeline shot.

More like "Tomber".  Yuk yuk.

Random shot.

I'm getting something like this, but with the Triforce.

This was a...strange...grave.

If lots had pieces of flare, this family would most certainly be it.

And WHY couldn't the baby be shown smiling??

Random shot.

Random shot.

Shot of the stairs next to the confederate cemetery.
