Entry: The folly of adulthood

I remember, once upon a time, someone asking me how many stars I thought were in the sky. Of course, this is when I was REALLY young and the first answer that came to mind was "29". I can't help but chuckle now.

Maybe there are only 29 stars in the sky that matter - or fewer.

Only 29 that matter? That's kind of depressing.

Really? I don't think it's depressing at all. I'm pretty sure (wait, let me count... yep) there are fewer than 29 people in my life I would take a bullet for in a premeditated and purposeful manner. I wouldn't trade any of them - sum of more than the parts. Perfectly content with my <29 stars.

I guess I've always lived believing every star is important... no matter how faint. Each adds something unique and special to the universe. I suppose some stars shine brighter than others in my galaxy but, to me, they're all important.

I can definitely see your point; I certainly don't have a flagrant disregard for people I don't know. There is still a point at which the amount I'm willing to invest in a person is affected by how 'brightly' they shine in my life.

Everyone does matter to someone and is far from being worthless. I live a small and limited existence: these are the stars that impact me the most. Some may overlap with other's but I doubt any two sets are the same.

You reminded me of these:

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."
~Albert Einstein

"To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world."

Don't you know that there is only one true answer (as figured out by 'Deep Thought') to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything (including the number of stars) is 42?!?

Silly boy.

We weren't asking for the answer to life's greatest question, just counting stars. And as many times as I've quoted Douglas Adam's drunken literature, I don't believe it is applicable in this case.

However, the Einstein quote is a juicy morsel and I thank you for sharing it.
